This is a fun worksheet to practice the recognition of rhymes in their written and auditory form. I gave students a copy, but if they want another copy you can access it here. Have fun with it!

Important People

I have created a timeline to help our class visualize  the order in which the people we talk about lived. It tells a little about the people we have discussed in class. I will add more people as we talk about them and what they have done. There may also be people we don't talk about, but who are very interesting. There is a link to a video and some ideas of books to read about each person. Watching these videos and reading these books is not required. You don't have to do all of them. It is an opportunity for you to explore the people who you find most interesting!

Story Time

When we read stories and when we write stories we can ask simple questions. They are  questions that help us build reading comprehension and help us think of ideas to write our own stories. Here is a little web or mind map that introduces the questions and gives some examples to get your creative minds thinking.

My Neighborhood, My Community, My Responsibility.
I our class we talked about being members of the community and how it is important to be responsible. There are signs we should know, places we should be able to find, and things we should do. I made an interactive brochure for the students to use as they practiced some of their skills. We did this in class. Please help your child finish what they weren't able to do in class, and feel free to talk to them about what they can do in your neighborhood (such as service projects or parks that they can visit). Your child should bring this brochure home; I will include the link so that you can still see it and use it if they lose it, or if they want another one for fun.

Practice with Pinterest

I am starting to collect ideas on Pinterest. This is mostly for my personal use in planning lessons for our classroom; however, you are more than welcome to look at my pin boards and use any of the ideas to help your child practice the concepts we are learning in class.

Here is a link to my 1st grade English board:

Celebrate

We are each different and it is fun to learn about different traditions and cultures. We should celebrate our differences. Here are a few videos about celebrations in different countries. You can watch them, and if you want to share your culture, or another cultural celebration you are familiar with, talk to me and we will make a video or do something else so that you can share it with the class!
The videos are under presentations, or you can follow this link then scroll down to them.

                  Important Historical Figures

In our class we will learn about many historical figures including presidents and civil rights activists. I will provide either what we went over in class or some extra source about each historical figure so that your child can learn more about these amazing people. The first person we will learn about is George Washington. The link provided is a short video about him. As the year goes on, you will be able to find all of the people we learn about under the historical figure tab.
